Short events push athletes to near-maximal intensity from the first stroke, and even longer events require repeated high-intensity efforts that generate significant acid accumulation. Why Swimming Is a Perfect Bicarb Sport

The events where sodium bicarbonate shows the strongest performance benefits — high-intensity efforts lasting 1–7 minutes — map almost perfectly onto competitive swimming distances. The 100m, 200m, and 400m events all fall squarely in this range. Even the 50m sprint, while shorter, involves maximal anaerobic output where buffering capacity matters.

Swimmers also tend to do high-volume interval training — repeated sets at high intensity with short rest. Bicarb supplementation can improve performance across the full session, not just the first interval.
